Here is a photo that I can't recall posting before. This is a conversion of a RoCo Pz IV to an M11/39. All the scenarios in Benghazi Handicap that use these tanks have inspired me to make some. Of course, the first one I played was Derna Airfield, since it only required one.

The hull and the tracks were easily built up or modified from the Pz IV originals. The fiddliest thing was the scratch built turret. Frank suggested I use the RoCo German SdKfz 234 turret, but I don't have 8-10 of those in my scraps box, whereas I do have that many Panzer IV and Flakpanzer IV hulls. So I rationalized by saying the turret sides of the 234 slope too much.

In this blurry photo you can't see clearly that the left front of the crew compartment is set back from the gun sponson. The gun is a 37 mm from a Grant, flipped over. One of these days when I get some more built, I will repaint them all in a more historically accurate color scheme.
HMS Marzipan, late of the Yangtze River flotilla was in Hong Kong for some time before being recalled to England for repairs. Enroute to Singapore, she took on elements of the 1st Bn, Gordon Highlanders.... A faulty rudder forced her to divert to the only deepwater port facility at Ginsling in the Java Sea.

I have the Britannia model on the paint table now. I considered scratch builidng the Marzipan as well, but I've had this magnificent model for some years and it fits... I'll add a shot to this thread after i finish the camoflage. A company of her bluejackets may feature in the game as well.

Great stuff, David! I have always liked the obsolescent and obscure. Guess that's why I play North Africa.
The sight of these planes inspires me to get a scenario or two going with aircraft. I have not used any since I did a Crete game 2-3 years ago - and of course the German stuff was anything but obsolescent or obscure in that one!

Hawker Fury of 3 Squadron, South African Air Force. I will be using it as a stand-in for the Furies of 1 and 2 Squadrons, SAAF in East Africa 1940-41 (3 Squadron was the only one for which I could find pictures and color profiles.) An old Matchbox kit won on ebay years ago. Something to give those CR.32's and Ca.133's a fighting chance.
Polikarpov I-153 of the Chinese 17th Pursuit Squadron. Close air support for my Chinese expeditionary force in Burma, early-to-mid 1942. The I-153 is the Russian Maquette kit, unfortunately a top finisher among the worst aircraft kits I've ever built. Crude molding, lots of flash, parts that simply don't fit (lots of cutting, filing and filler putty to get the wings and engine cowling to fit the fuselage), no pilot or windscreen in the kit (had to scrounge both from the spares box), the list of woes goes on....

At least it came with a passable pair of FAB-100 bombs and shackles for them; rather handy since in Burma the I-153 was relegated to the ground attack role. I just won a cheap Frog Tupolev SB kit on ebay, so all I need now is a Republic P-43 Lancer or Vultee P-66 Vanguard to round out my Chinese Air Force. The lack of Chinese roundels on the upper wing surfaces and fuselage sides seems to have been typical for Chinese Polikarpov fighters. There are roundels on the bottom of the lower wings, but they aren't visible in the photos.

Chris, a fine looking model that captures well many of USS Quail's salient features. A quibble if I might over your statement concerning Quail's armament: the original armament of the WW1 'Bird' class minesweepers was 2 x 3"/50 guns mounted side-by-side on a platform forward of the wheelhouse, as well as 2-4 x .50-cal machineguns. On some surviving vessels of the class, this was eventually supplemented or replaced by 40mm and 20mm guns. In the case of USS Quail, she almost certainly retained her original armament when lost. Regardless, for CD-TOB purposes the single 3" gun on your model is quite sufficient.

http://www.navsource.org/archives/11/02015.htm

In addition to USS Quail (AM-15), the U.S. Asiatic Fleet in 1941 also included sisterships USS Bittern (AM-36), Finch (AM-9), Tanager (AM-5), Lark (AM-21), and Whippoorwill (AM-35). The campaign in the Philippines exacted a heavy toll; in addition to Quail (which was scuttled off Corregidor 5 May 1942 after being damaged by Japanese bombs and artillery fire), Bittern was irreparably damaged in the 10 December 1941 bombing of Cavite Navy Yard and later scuttled in Manila Bay, Finch was badly damaged by a bomb near miss off Bataan on 9 April 1942 and allowed to sink the next day, Tanager was sunk by Japanese artillery fire off Corregidor 4 May 1942, only Lark and Whippoorwill surviving.

David

I look forward to seeing the SCR-268 radar when it's done.

Hi all -

A pet project of mine in prep for this Bataan game was to bathtub a ship. Inspired by the examples posted here - David Reasoner, Jack etc, I've always wanted to create a scaled down naval vessel for tabletop use.

For Bataan in 1942, the queen of the US Navy was the USS Quail:

Here's my version - sorry for the photo quality:

The figures for scale are from the Naval Battalion - figures by Sergeant Major's Miniatures. I'll post some pics of the troops separately.

The mighty Quail sported a 3" naval gun, 2 40mm guns, and some machine guns. Other naval historians will point out that the Quail is famous because some of its crew escaped Corregidor in one of the ship's boats and made it all the way to Australia!

I haven't done one of these before, but am happy it turned out reasonably well.

The actual crew will be by Britannia (3 figs) - they're on the paint table now.

This is after all David's fault! I'm painting an SCR 268 now - that is definitely David's fault!

Thanks for looking

Hmm... Not that this is neccessarily a purely Communist trait.

A few years ago, in Germany a lot of people objected to an exhibition that went against the 'accepted wisdom' that all criminals were in the SS and that the Wehrmacht were honorable soldiers.
A lot of Britons object to calling the bombing of Dresden a war crime.
There is quite a discussion in US wargaming forums anytime somebody doutbs the quality of US troops.
Not to mention the Japanese...

Greetings

I'm going out of town for the week, so I thought I'd get this in early:

Happy Fourth of July! And happy birthday to the good ol' US of A.

It's a great country with a bright future.

Some people say we think that we're God. We're not God. We just borrowed His SMITE button for our fire control system.
