Regimental Commander Game 1  Reply with quote

I've had in mind for some time to try and develop a game with an operational feel in which individual engagements and battles are subsets within a broader context.

Some of you may be familiar with an old board game by Jedko named Field Marshal. Here is a link for any unfamiliar: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/5185/field-marshal

I have based my scenario on this board game. It provides a fictional setting, and the mechanics are such that any modern armies can be used.

In short, two players each manoeuvre a couple of battalions. They battle it out on a peninsula with external influence from off-board actions that may provide additional troops or require troop withdrawals. Chance cards also release strategic reserve forces in the form of paratroops or marines, and a centrally held reserve might be released to you. Air assets may also become available. Finally a small city-state (Black state) might join either side by chance or will do so if invaded.

I'm happy to send anyone a copy for free if you PM me, or perhaps it could be uploaded to this site if someone tells me how.

Here is the map, the board being 2m x 3m (6' x 9'):

And here are some screen shots of the board:

Looking South West across the city-state of Black:

Looking North West:

Looking South East:

Looking north. The roads that lead south are of importance to both players as they link their forces to Southern Command.

Some of the internal terrain. The terrain is deliberately 'sticky' and close (as the rules suggest, think Normandy rather than Russian steppes). Mist is in force throughout (30" max visibility and vehicles move at half pace). Vegetation is forest rather than woods. All of this encourages micro-battles in various places and severely restricts vehicles. Combined arms is the order of the day.

Black sets up in his cities, or can be left off the board until needed. I have used Dutch troops here.

The setup sequence is quite important. First both players set up their strategic reserve that might be released to them, or are automatically activated if the enemy comes within a certain distance. They set up at respective key strategic cities. Here the German reserve is a Medium company and a mechanised company.

And the British have an Infantry Tank Company and motorised infantry company.

Here is a platoon of the strategic reserve. Airfix and Matchbox Infantry.

Then both forces set up their Border Defence forces, which, despite the name, can be set up anywhere. Here are venerable Emhar WWI British fulfilling the role of British Territorials guarding a city and a bridge

Ancient Airfix German Infantry fulfil the role for the Germans. This game allows some seldom used troops to make a brief appearance

The Britsh deploy their strike force in the south. A medium tank company and motorised company

The Germans square off against them. HaT Pz III and S-Models Pz II

The British deploy their other battalion in a defensive posture on the North Eastern Approach to their key strategic city.

The Germans deploy their second battalion facing the defending British and hope to push through them

The Fujimi 222 may help by affecting British morale rolls

The game starts. The German medium tank company in the south pushes forward hoping to win the race to the hill feature. Their motorised company swings on to the central axis

In the north a platoon from their motorcycle company probes forward across a bridge

While their infantry company swings wide to flank the British dug in position

The British in the south attempt to roll over the German Border Defence stands but they manage to score a hit and in the morale phase the British tanks are pinned

The British infantry company in the south crosses the river to flank the Border Defence stands

Turn 2 and the British receive reinforcements in the form of two 2lb antitank guns to bolster the northern defensive position

A German support company of a 37mm anti-tank, a 75mm infantry gun and an engineer platoon arrives to support the German southern push.

A German engineer company reinforces the northern push

As does a machine gun/mortar company

The German tank company in the south moves on to the hilly terrain to contest the British cruisers from hull-down positions. So far so good.

And their motorised company dismounts and occupies the forest to their north. A strong position.

But the proximity of British tanks and Infantry cause the tanks to Pin in the morale phase, the start of a cascading problem for the Germans

Turn 3 and in the north the German push is reinforced by a light tank company

While the British second cruiser squadron reinforces the southern push. Unfortunately the lead cruiser squadron is still held up on the bridge so the second squadron starts in depth

In the south the Germans manage to bag a British Cruiser IV even though pinned

But lose a Pz II themselves to 2lb antitank fire. In the morale phase disaster strikes and they become Demoralised. Luckily their Battalion Commander is close at hand.

The cruisers for their part can't take advantage as they become Pinned after their loss and their supporting British infantry company doesn't like the look of things and becomes Shaken.

The Germans receive a welcome boost with the arrival of two general support Ju87s. These are Revell 1:144

I waste about 15 minutes trying to get a shot in focus....

The Stukas bomb the lead British cruisers on the southern approach

The bomb blasts make the scene look suitably war-like

The second British cruiser squadron moves forward on the southern axis

Supported by an Engineer Company. These chaps are Zvezda figures

The British receive some lucky reinforcements from Southern Command who arrive on the southern flank

They will try their best to reach the German tank company while it is still Demoralised

In the north the Germans have almost cleared the Border Defence stands and are ready to assault the British defensive position

The German demoralised tank company in the south is pushed further back by British artillery. The only good news is that they are able to recover an eliminated tank

The British for their part just can't get moving and their second cruiser squadron is Pinned by the pesky German Border Defence forces.

The British tardiness allows the German support company to move forward and establish positions to protect the demoralised tank company. The 37mm anti-tank in particular is destined to be a thorn in the British side

Surprise! The British Marines become available and look to land in the south behind the German Support Company and demoralised tank company.

The Germans have released their Strategic Reserve and their medium tank company rushes south to try and save their tank company

In the north the German tank company and infantry company are now set to assault the British defensive position

A glimmer of hope for the British in the north: Black declares war on the Germans and hastens to reinforce the northern British defensive position

But nothing is easy as it looks. The German Marines are also released and aim to land behind the northern defensive position

Turn 5

The British try and retard the northern attack with Blenheims that are released, along with a Lysander flying as FAC

In the north the German Marines, brilliantly disguised as SS troops (Pegasus), land on the beach behind the British

The Germans assault the northern position but lose a Pz III to 2lb anti-tank fire

The dug-in British infantry company in the north is Shaken by the assault

The British advance in the south finally gains some momentum

And the engineers move forward to open a second bridge in the south

Disaster for the Germans as the British Infantry Company from Southern Command moves forward and, despite fire from the German 37mm and 75mm gun, manage to contact the Demoralised German company and it surrenders to them.

The British Marines (who look remarkably like Belgian motorised troops but started their life as Esci British Infantry for the Zulu wars....) land in the south

Another part of the German strategic reserve arrives. A Paratroop Company

They land in the south behind the British to occupy an undefended city

The German Marines enter the forest behind the British northern position

Which is just as well because the assaulting infantry company coming from the other flank is pushed back

The Germans establish an observation and fire base for a more deliberate attack in the north

In the south the British push forward

While the German medium company in the south can't resist hitting the British Marines hard. They are Shaken and thus effectively out of the game. But this detour by the Germans allows the British armour to push forward

And they return the favour by hitting the German tanks hard. The Germans for their part are Shaken.

The British continue their southern advance

The German paratroops meanwhile consolidate their position

The British engineers in the south reorientate to try and contest the paratroopers or at least dissuade them from advancing further

In the north the German artillery works over the British in the city

and the Germans finally take the city

That was 12 turns and where I called the game. I needed to tidy up a few rules, and I had not been as thorough in Regrouping and getting stands back in the game as I should. But I think there is the basis for a decent game that has a certain operational feel. The uncertainty in the arrival of forces makes it frustratingly realistic and also makes the game play quite well solitaire.

As I noted above, happy to send anyone a copy for free Smile

I'll set up a second game to test a different approach.

Hope you enjoyed it so far.

Regards

Michael

Aside from the kudos that I and others have poured on your amazing collection and set-up, I wanted to say that I'm really impressed at the quality and quantity of photos!

I don't know to upload a pdf (if that is what the game is) onto the forum but if you want me to make it available through my CD fan page, let me know, email is on that page, www.g-design.us/cd.

Howdy,

I like. Looks interesting. I will PM with my email.

I did something similar once, called it the "Flank River Campaign" which was based on the western desert, but portrayed a mid-war Soviet offensive on eastern front.

Ponder on,

JAS

Nice looking game and photos...so how long did that tale to play. 12 Turns can take a long time with such an expansive game, well done!

I'm in the fortunate situation that I can leave the game unattended and come back to it when I wish. So, this game was played over four days with about three turns a day. It's a relaxing way to mix gaming with chores.
