1983 Germany

A few pics of the last CDTOB Moderns game we played. This was played at the Dunstable Generals Club between Dave N & I. Dave played the Soviets

The Soviets has a MRD type T-64B regiment. The Americans had one battalion with  pair of M1 companies and an M2 company on table and a reinforcing battalion with a pair of M2 companies and an M1 company. The US reinforcements were triggered when the Soviets crossed the lateral road and entered a company at a time. The Soviets had a 122mm and two 152mm battalions off table, the US player had an M109 battalion off table armed with ICM.

The Red Hoard ready to go. The US forces were spread very thin over a 4km frontage. M1's can be seen to the left and the right. The infantry is thinly deployed in the centre guarding the lateral road. The Soviet objectives were the two roads disappearing out of the top of the picture.

T-64's - these are H&R models as are the others in shot

M1's on the US left flank

After a disappointing initial volley i chose to disengage the M1's on my right. This was a big error, I underestimated the speed of the T-64s and they caught up with the defenceless M1's and shot them in the rear. Although the M2's got some effective TOW shots in two of them wasn't enough to stem the tide. The Soviet rush meant they had reached the road in a couple of turns thus triggering the US reinforcements. They were desperately needed and there was nothing between the Soviets and the road exit.

Soviets break through in the middle too. Only the US BHQ tank stands in the way (Scotia M1). The play test rules significantly penalise ATGM shooting under 600m which made the M2's rather ineffective

First US reinforcements arrive in the nick of time, flanking the Soviet advance.

The M1's from the US right flank put in a counter attack against the breakthrough in the centre

Attack and counter attack smash into each other and carnage results, both side suffering heavily

The first of the M2 reinforcements moves to secure the second road. (H&R M2)

Most of both sides armour is turned to burning scrap metal. Dave pushes the (empty) BMP battalion into the wood between the two objective roads. We ran out of time at this point but the two remaining M1's were going to have a hard time of it hunting down the BMP's in the limited visibility in the woods

It was  hard fought and bloody game. We got about 10-11 turns done in a couple of hours. At the end it could still have gone either way
