Nomonhan (Khalkhin-Gol)

These games were played between Ian, Chris and I on 3/8/08 in my nice new conservatory. Ian was the Japanese and Chris and I played the Soviets. I provided the Japanese kit and the (minimal) terrain. Chris provided the majority of the Soviets.

Yasuoka Attacks - 2/7/39

4th Tank Regiment advancing down the "main road" towards the objective. SHQ Type 95 Ha-Go (mastered by Ian) and a Crusader Type 89B Chi-Ro

Elements of the 241st Armoured Car Battalion await hull down to confront the Japanese. BA-6M are home produced resins, the FAI is Liberation Miniatures.

241st on the Northern Flank.

The Japanese 3rd Tank Regiment, carrying the engineers, outflanks the 241st to the north. This was a brave move prompted by the very short amount of time the Japanese had to get to their objectives. However luck was with the Japanese and the Soviet shooting was lamentable. Milicast Type-89B Chi-Ro (much nicer than the Crusader model, though they are compatible in size) and SHQ Type 94 Tankette

Close up of the Milicast Type-89B

Panoramic view of the Soviet 149th Motor Rifle Regiment, blocking both of the objectives. The 4th Tank Regiment would be attacking down the nearest track, the Japanese 3rd Tank regiment down the further road.

1st Battalion 149th MRR with the regimental 76mm M1927 (not sure of the maker, perhaps Skytrex). The tractor is a T-26T (though historically it was most likely the un-armoured version) by Cromwell Models.

1st Battalion 175th Artillery regiment performing harassing fire on the oncoming Japanese. Liberation Miniatures 122mm M1910 and an Ostmodels STZ-5

2nd Battalion 149th MRR blocking the northern track. Ostmodels 45mm M1932 AT Gun

240th Recce Battalion guarding the northern Soviet flank. FAA 76mm and another Lib Mins FAI (this one has a wheel swap)

The 4th tank regiment swarms past the 3rd Battalion 149th MRR. Neither side managed to damage the other

The Japanese 64th Infantry Regiment arrives on the table. The Regiment arrives too late in the scenario to reach the objective by the end of the game so is limited in its possible game effects. Its most useful asset is the 70mm Infantry Gun

The 4th Tank Regiment reach the wire around the southern track defended by the 1st Battalion 149th MRR. Good shooting by the 76mm results in casualties. The arrival of the BT-5 from the 11th tank brigade does not help the Japanese predicament.

Last tank of the 3rd Regiment in the north. the others having fallen fowl of the BA-6's. At this point the Japanese do not have enough armour to get one AFV off the table and to have three left on it. All remaining tanks are pinned. The Russians are in no position to kill all the remaining Japanese tanks so the first game is a draw. ZiS-42 halftrack by Frontline. Closer Gaz-AAA by Alby, the MGs are from Skytrex. Further Gaz by Britannia.
