Battle of Voin

This was a rerun of of the Voin scenario played between John and I in the break between Xmas and New Year 2008. John played the Soviets and I played the Germans. The game was played on a sunny winters day in my conservatory, all kit and terrain is mine

Voraus Abteilung Eberbach in their start positions outside Kamenevo

Soviet motor rifle battalion awaits the German onslaught

The NKVD on the Soviet right flank

88mm (Airfix) of the 1 Batterie 11 FlaK Abteilung crosses the river. The Kradschützen can be seen in the background

Katukov and the 1st Tank Battalion

85mm M1939 AA guns used by the tank destroyers line up behind the hedge line. The T junction in the background is the victory location for a German marginal victory

First blood to the Soviets. PzKfw-II (Matchbox) is shot by the 45mm of the motor rifle battalion

Soviet 1st tank battalion moves to the flank to face the panzers (Fujimi tanks)

German Pioneers move against the NKVD. Unfortunately for the Germans both units failed morale and fell back.

Moving the Soviet 1st Tank Battalion meant the western half of the table was undefended. The Germans exploited this by moving the PzKfw-IV and Kradschützen up the western flank.

The Germans occupy the wood. Just out of shot is the T-Junction they require for a marginal victory. At this point in the game the the Soviets only have the Brigade Recce to face them. However reinforcements are on the way

After some inconclusive long range duelling with the Germans 1st Battalion pulls back to face the threat from the PzKfw-IV in the wood near the T Junction

7 Kompanie of the Kradschützen charges the dwindling motor rifle troops

After rallying the pioneers and supporting panzers again try to advance up the German right (east) flank. This time the NKVD wilt under a hail of MG fire from the panzers.

1st tank battalion move back to the T junction. There is little the Germans can do about the move, the Soviet 85mm guns protect the tanks' flank

German armour moves up the eastern table edge, past the defeated NKVD

The K18 arrives on table and manages to set up without attracting every artillery piece the Russians have

Soviet reinforcements move to outflank the PzKfw-IV in the wood (Ostmodels BT's)

Katyuska FO takes up position on point 235

Although the Kradschützen do well against the infantry the PzKfw-IV are now outnumbered

The Germans make a desperate last ditch lunge for the T junction. they succeed in killing the KV and don't take any casualties but are undone by poor morale rolls

The Soviets try for a decisive victory. The Germans have to scrape together a bunch of miscellaneous HQ units but succeed in fending off the Soviet challenge

The last brave German. He was in a winning position but was surrounded by T-34's. Unfortunately bravery was not enough. Although not killed he was forced back

A hard fought game that ended in a Soviet marginal win
