Waldfeucht

The game was played 2/3/08 at John's house between John & I. John provided most of the Brits (except the Lloyd carrier) and I most of the Germans (except the Tigers). John played the British and I the Germans

The 6pdr (Airfix) from 5th KOSB to the west of Waldfeuct

2Kp I/1219 IR outflanks down the eastern flank of Waldfeuch while...

...the Tiger (Dragon Armour) covers the front of the Town.

Initially every thing went really well for the Germans. The Brit tanks bounced shots off the Tiger, the Tiger's return fire forced the Firefly to retreat. Then the Shermans went shaken and fell back in the morale phase and the infantry guarding the flank went pinned. German elation didn't last long though: 2Kp stormed in to the village and were roundly beaten by the pinned Brits. That was pretty much the end of the German infantry, though the Tiger was still at large

14th/18th Hussars (Hat Shermans) after tangling with the Tiger

Lloyd Carrier (Ostmodels with a scratch built cover) drags the 6pdr to flank the Tiger. Unfortunately for the Brits the German panzer moved before the gun could be set up

The Tiger moved south of Waldfeuct to shoot up the shaken Shermans. In the distance the valiant KOSB battalion commander attempts to rally the tanks. The rally was successful but not before the Firefly was turned in to a smouldering wreck. There was several turns of fighting to the south of the town, neither side's morale was great, and the Tiger was constantly suppressed under fire from the fearsome British artillery. Eventually the Tiger retreated shaken to then be shot up the arse by a Sherman.

German reinforcements. HQ StuG-IIIG of the 341 StuG Brigade (Cromwell Models)

176 Fusilier Battalion rushes forward. Despite spreading out as best they could they suffered mightily at the hands of the Royal Artillery

A Tiger of 301 FKL Abt screens the right hand side of the German assault. This tank was a to be killed by 6pdr APDS a couple of turns later

StuG and Jagdpanzer IV/70(A) of 341 StuG Abt move up to the outskirts of Waldfeuct

StuG's move past Waldfeuct in order to finish off the Shermans, whilst the 176 Fusiliers prepares to assault, temporarily hidden behind the hedge from observation from the British FO's

After many delays the British Auster AOP arrives over the table

B Coy 5th KOSB reinforces the main part of Waldfeuct town

176 Fusiliers attack goes pear-shaped. All companies fail their morale & pin. Once pinned in place they were at the mercy of the British artillery and pounded to pieces. The good news for the Germans was that in the mean time the StuG's had nailed the remaining two Shermans and their guns had prevented The Brits from moving up the 4th KOSB to the town

The Germans bring up their last infantry company and as darkness falls gain the smallest toe-hold in the outskirts of Waldfeuct.

The final fight on the last turn. The British counter attack and the last German stand tries to re-enter the town. The Germans died in the attempt and the town remained in British hands

The game was a decisive British victory. After the game I re-wrote the victory conditions, but even under the revised conditions the British would have won. The German infantry is their weak point. It's not as good as the British infantry and is very vulnerable to the massed British guns. Still it was a very enjoyable game with lots of manoeuvre. If the dice had been just a little more in their favour the Germans could have forced a draw (a victory under the revised conditions), though it has to be said both sides had periods of lamentable luck
